Excitement as Children Return to School
After more than three years, the children in the North-West region of Cameroon are finally returning to school.
Community schools have been permitted to operate in calm areas. Children in unsafe communities can be relocated accordingly. Needless to say, the children are very happy that they can now receive an education.
The Anglophone crisis is still ongoing, and things aren’t back to normal by any stretch of the imagination. Thousands of people have been displaced and there are still regular clashes between separatists and government officials. Maintaining any kind of stability for civilians and, in particular, the children, is still a major struggle for the community.
Three years ago, violent attacks on buildings and staff forced all schools to close. Attempts to reopen have been met with threats and violence, and so were quickly shut down again. However, we are optimi
stic about the la
test developments and sincerely hope that the small selection of schools will remain open.
We work with children from impoverished backgrounds, so none of them has the means to buy supplies such as stationary, books, bag and uniform. The children who are lucky enough to have sponsors will be given these supplies. Sponsorship monies take care of all of this along with any school fees that are required, and we are very grateful to our sponsors for their support. To find out more about sponsoring a child, please click here.
For the children who are yet to find sponsors, we and GMM will do our best to provide the essentials. To kit out a child for school costs around £10.00. If you’d like to donate school supplies for one child, please click here.
As the children are registered for school, our partners in Cameroon will be assessing them for sponsorship eligibility. As soon as this is done, we will update our Children Needing Sponsors page.
