Study Sessions Pilot: A Success in Yaoundé
March–May 2025 | Funded by De Silva Foundation
This spring, we completed the first-ever pilot of our Study Sessions programme in Yaoundé, Cameroon—an initiative designed to support children living in challenging circumstances with academic help, reading time, and a nourishing meal each week.
Over eight weeks, six children aged 5–18 attended structured Sunday sessions led by a qualified learning mentor. Each child received targeted homework support, time for reading, and one-to-one attention where needed. A healthy meal was provided at every session, helping children stay focused and ready to learn.
Why We Launched It
Many children in Yaoundé struggle with access to quiet, supportive environments for learning. The Study Sessions project was created to bridge this gap—offering a calm, consistent space where children could concentrate on their education without distractions.
The impact
-
100% attendance for 4 of the 6 children
-
One-to-one make-up sessions for the 2 who missed a day
-
Improved reading fluency, academic confidence, and motivation
-
One child’s exam grades rose from 14 out of to 17 out of 20
-
One young person, who had previously struggled to pass her school years, progressed to the next Form after passing the school year a huge achievement. We had started to explore alternative education options for her, but after this success, she’s gained renewed faith in sticking with school.
Children told us the sessions were helpful and fun. Parents and caregivers noticed improvements and expressed gratitude. Our learning mentor also observed increased confidence and a love of reading among the group.
What’s Next
We’re now applying for funding to expand the Study Sessions into all three of the areas we work in. Based on the success of this pilot, we’re also refining the model to include structured learning resources and improved evaluation tools.
We’re incredibly grateful to the De Silva Foundation for funding this pilot. Their support made it possible for six children to access learning support that otherwise wouldn’t have been available.
