Catch-Up Classes
In the summer of 2024, we launched a pilot scheme in Belo to enhance the reading abilities of our children through specialised catch-up classes. This initiative aimed to provide children with the essential skills they need to succeed academically.
The idea
The idea behind our catch-up classes was to identify children who needed additional support with their reading skills. We conducted three lessons per week over two months for eleven children, using a structured approach based on the UK reading curriculum. This pilot aimed to establish effective strategies for improving reading comprehension and fluency.
The result
The results were impressive. On average, the children improved by two reading levels, demonstrating the effectiveness of our tailored reading lessons. Their progress showcases the potential impact of expanding this program to more areas. Additionally, each session included a nutritious meal to support their overall well-being.
The impact
The impact of the catch-up classes extends beyond reading skills. These sessions were created with the hope to foster a love for learning, boost confidence, and improve literacy levels among children who previously struggled. The success of this pilot emphasises the urgent need for programmes that address educational disparities in Cameroon.
