Textbooks for Unsponsored Children
Funded by the De Silva Foundation, January 2025
Access to education means more than just being in a classroom – it’s also about having the tools to learn. For many children in Cameroon, owning a textbook is a luxury. In January 2025, our textbook initiative began changing that – one book at a time.
The idea
The idea behind our textbook project was to ensure that every child we support has the resources they need to succeed at school. While sponsored children often receive these materials through their sponsorship package, we noticed a real gap for unsponsored children – many of whom were attending school but struggling to keep up without their own textbooks.
Thanks to a generous grant from the De Silva Foundation, we were able to step in and help.
The result
With the funding, we purchased textbooks for nine unsponsored children, providing them with the key materials required for their school year. These books covered a range of core subjects and were carefully selected based on each child’s school requirements and grade level.
This may seem like a small gesture – but for a child trying to follow along in class without a book, it’s absolutely transformative.
The impact
The impact of this project has been immediate. The children who received textbooks are now able to fully participate in their lessons, complete homework more effectively, and build confidence in their academic abilities.
It’s a powerful reminder that even small, targeted support can make a big difference – especially for children who aren’t yet sponsored but are working just as hard to pursue their education.
We’re incredibly grateful to the De Silva Foundation for making this possible – and we’re committed to expanding this work wherever we see the need.
Feedback from the children and field workers
“I am Aberltine. I am very happy and excited for the textbooks I have received from the Children of Cameroon through Regan. The textbooks will go a long way in fostering my studies. The textbooks are helping me in that if a topic is tough and I don't understand, I go back to the textbook for easy study. They will guide me on how to answer questions and do my assignments without going through difficulty.
They will help increase my understanding, making me discover some of the topics not been taught or handled in class. I will study them alone, which will give me better chances of succeeding in my examination. They will help increase my scope of knowledge in education. They will help me to understand how questions are being set in GCE, as well as help increase the rate at which I study and occupy my time. When I am lonely, I will always be going through them, and this will improve my understanding.
I am very grateful.
Thanks to Julian's Foundation.”
